Birding Tomales Bay by Kayak

Saturday, April 29th

9:30 AM – 3:00 PM

$130.00

I will be leading this special exploration with Liz Wilhelm, a good friend, wonderful naturalist and head guide of Blue Waters Kayaking. Come, discover Tomales Bay by kayak this spring. The bay is one of the most productive and dramatically beautiful estuaries in California. In the winter over 20,000 ducks, loons, grebes, and other waterbirds feed in its rich waters. Spring is an excellent time to see these and other species migrating along the coast, especially by kayak. Marbled Godwits, Willets, and other shorebirds feed, while Red-Throated Loon, Horned Grebe, Brant, and scoters linger.  Rather than just viewing these birds from the shore, on this special trip, we will travel on stable double kayaks to get close views of dozens of cormorants that breed on Hog Island, Osprey nesting sites along the bay, and maybe even a Bald Eagle. In addition to the rich birdlife, we may see Tule Elk, American River Otters, and Bat Rays. this paddle will start at Miller Park and cross over to White’s Gulch near the mouth of the bay, one of my favorite aquatic habitats. The kayaking portion of our trip is weather and wind dependent. If canceled, we will regroup for a land-based exploration.

This tour is sponsored by the Point Reyes Field Institute

Blue Waters Kayaking

I’ve led wonderful kayaking tours with this experienced group for over twenty-five years. All their guides are highly skilled and great naturalists in their own. This year I will be leading several paddling excursions with them. To register and get details on these and other tours view their website. www.bluewaterskayaking.com

Saturday, February 11 - Paddle Drakes Estero Wilderness 9:00 - 3:30

Drake's Estero is my favorite place to paddle at Point Reyes and one of the most stunning places on the California coast. Departing from the north end of this wilderness estuary we will glide past eelgrass and kelp beds in this inspiring habitat. The estero is one of the largest breeding areas for harbor seals in Northern California. Bat rays, leopard shark, brant, loons, grebes, osprey and white pelicans are some of the birds we may encounter. This special habitat is the only officailly designated marine wilderness on the West Coast. Please join me for this special natural history excursion.
