Local Whale Watching Expeditions

Whales

dolphins, porpoises, seals, sea lions!

These marine mammals can be found at Point Reyes and further afield on a unique ocean cruise or a dramatic coastal bluff hike.

Winter, Spring

California Gray Whales migrate along the shore during the winter and spring. From mid-December through late January, our state marine mammal travels south past the Bay Area to coastal lagoons in Baja California for calving and mating. By the end of February through early May, these same animals can be seen traveling north back to feeding areas between Alaska and Siberia. Mothers and their new offspring are the last ones in this parade. Harbor Porpoise, California Sea Lion, Elephant Seal and Harbor Seal are often seen while we search for Gray Whales.

Summer, Fall

Rich upwelling creates an ideal feeding zone in the California Current from May through October. Blue Whale and Humpback Whale are the most frequently sighted cetaceans during this period. Other potential wildlife include Killer Whale, Dall's Porpoise, Pacific White-sided Dolphin and Northern Right Whale Dolphin. Sea turtles, sharks as well as albatross, puffin and many other seabirds add excitement to these marine expeditions.

The company to book an expedition with is San Francisco Bay Whale Watching !!

David leads six to eight hour whale watching expeditions for San Francisco Bay Whale Watching. David is pleased to be dedicating his time and cetacean knowledge for this new company. David brings over 20 years of experience and knowledge as a whale watch guide to SFBWW.

Previous to 2004, David worked as a whale watch naturalist for the Oceanic Society, based out of San Francisco. Unfortunately, after 17 years of dedication David was told that unless he worked for them exclusively, he was no longer wanted. Instead of bow to blackmail, David left with his integrity intact.

This island-studded marine wilderness is often referred to as the ‘Mexican Galapagos’ and it boasts one of the greatest diversities of sea life anywhere on Earth. It is flanked on one side by the cool waters of the North Pacific and on the other by the warm nutrient rich waters of the Sea of Cortez.
